Description

Some of the other highlights of Norcross: -We were cofounded by a Malagasy woman named Laingo Malala (a lapidary expert who still runs the mines and factories) and Carl Grant (a hobbyist mineral expert gone pro), who together pioneered the proper technique to cut Labradorite to maximize the flash effect — setting today’s market standards for the stone. Carl passed in the early 2000s, and his son Robert now runs things alongside Laingo.

We put ethical standards and the letter of the law in Madagascar at the forefront of our operations. We start our apprentices at three times the livable wage, giving them raises as they master their craft and take on new responsibilities, which is why we have as many as three generations of carvers working at our factory. And for each mining property, we hire locals from the villages near our operations to help with economic development — in addition to making donations to the villages, building schools (of which we have built two that we staffed and maintain), roads, and bridges. While Madagascar has legal requirements for miners to assist local villages, those are largely ignored by other companies, while we prefer to go above and beyond for the local people who make what we do possible.

Our main stones are Labradorite, Blue Apatite, Amazonite, and Sea Jasper (our trade name for Orbicular Jasper, where the Ocean Jasper trade name comes from a neighboring mine). This is a family company, despite its size.

I spent all day on Saturday at the 22nd Street Show and never found the selection or as good of prices as at this show. They didn;t have very many customers though and I think it was because of the parking fees. Worth the cost though.(Don’t get me wrong I also enjoyed the the 22nd St.)

I love many of the Madagascar minerals so this was one of my top choices for my first time at the Tucson gem and mineral show in 2023. First I want to mention their larger pieces. The first room had many LARGE and beautiful carvings which were amazing to see. I recommend going simply for that. I don’t recommend buying things from them simply because of the pricing. During my visit I picked out two rose Quartz spheres (that were one of the only things I found affordable) from a bin marked at a certain price. When I went to pay they told me the ones I chose were too high quality and the price would be much more expensive so I passed. I remember also seeing a clear Quartz turtle carving with a labradorite shell that was around the size of my hand for $500. I laughed out loud at that price. There’s so many vendors during the Tucson gem show and most can beat these prices by a long shot. So in short, fun to look at but very overpriced.

I was there last year. And they had huge carved pieces that are great display pieces. And there is a huge assortment of every kind spheres, odd shape. Definitely worth a visit. Look for signs on left side of main road if coming from Oro Vslley.

They handle small business and wholesale. I saw that one guy who came from New York purchased over a ton of the minerals! I think that their minerals are not bad. Some people misunderstand minerals from Madagascar are low quality.
